AMMAN: Indian Boxer Shiva Thapa beat South Korean Minsu Choi on Sunday to set a record in Asian Championships. He became the first male boxer to win six medals in Asian Championships.
Shiva Thapa is playing in the light welterweight category of the competition being held in the Amman of Jordan and beat his competitor 4-1. This win assures him a bronze medal at the very minimum in this competition. He is also the best performing Indian boxer in the current tournament.
His previous wins include a gold in 2013, two silvers in 2017 and 2021 respectively and bronze in 2015 and 2019. He is also aiming at his second gold in this tournament.
With the confirmation of a medal, he crossed the record of Vassiliy Levit who had the record of being the only other male pugilist with five medals in Assian Championship. Belonging from Kazakh, this player also has an Olympic silver and two world championship bronze medals on his list of wins.
In the women's category both M.C. Mary Kom and L Sarita Devi have more medals than Thapa with seven and eight medals respectively. L Sarita Devi has the distinction of winning in six successive Asian Championships. And out of this haul, five are gold medals.
Commonwealth Games bronze medal winner Mohammad Hussamuddin (in the 57 kg category) and Govind Kumar Sahani (in the 48 kg category) have also moved to the semifinals of the tournament. Hussamuddin will face the 2021 World Championships silver medalist Serik Temirzha in his semifinals bout on November 10. In the other quarterfinal, Thailand Open gold medallist Ananta Chopade (54kg) bowed out of the competition after suffering a 0-4 loss to Seidekmatov Sanzhai of Kyrgyzstan.
Anikushita Boro beat Tsubata Arsia of Japan in the 56 kg category and Lovlina Borgohain won against Valentina Khalzova of Kazakhstan in the 75 kg category to reach the semifinals.
